The word baptism originates from the Greek word; Baptizein, which means to immerse or dip into. The Christian Church identifies Baptism as the first of the Seven Sacraments and the first of the three sacraments of initiation. Just as Jesus Christ was baptised by John the Baptist in the River Jordan (Matthew 3), Christians are also blessed by holy water and are initiated into the Church and welcomed into the family of God. This declaration of faith allows the candidate to join the mission of the church and grants them access to the Kingdom of Heaven. The Christian understanding of this sacrament is as an opening for living a life blessed by the Holy Spirit.
